Message from SPRING Director

Dr. Kafui Afi Ocloo

I am happy to introduce to you the International Master of Science Programme in Development Planning and Management at the Department of Planning. The programme is popularly called - SPRING (Spatial Planning for Regions in Growing Economies). SPRING is a joint Master of Science programme delivered through a partnership between the Department of Planning (KNUST), the University of Dortmund, Ardhi University in Tanzania, the University of Philippines, Universidad Austral de Chile in Chile, and the Federal University of ABC in Brazil. The programme has been run by the Department since 1985.

The programme gives students invaluable skills for the job market as well as for life. Students of the programme become a part of an invaluable international network of dynamic thinkers including academics and other professionals in a cross-cultural setting. This helps students acquire enough experience far in excess of other programmes.  The programme includes theoretical and practical courses. Students have the opportunity to practice what they have learnt in class during field trips before they graduate. The programme treats students as clients whose feedback and input are deemed important for its success.

As a result, constant conscientious feedback and market research is carried out to improve upon the programme. Students who enroll on the programme have the opportunity to study in two partner universities by the time they graduate and receive a joint certificate from both universities. Interested applicants to this international programme can download the networks application form, fill it and submit their application through the Department of Planning, KNUST, Kumasi.

The Department of Planning, KNUST introduced a full two-year programme in Ghana in 2003 with similar content. The programme has two models: the weekend and weekday. The weekend model helps workers to enrol on the programme without having to leave their jobs.

Thank you for taking time to browse the programme’s website. We would welcome an opportunity to interact with you about your educational progression, development and subsequent enrollment into the programme.

Yours sincerely,

Kafui Ocloo (PhD)
