Welcome to the Department of Planning

I welcome you to the Department of Planning, the first and leading Planning School in Ghana and West Africa!  Established in 1958, immediately after Ghana’s independence in 1957, the Department trained urban and regional planners who were tasked to design the spatial, social and economic future of the emerging nation.

For over 60 years, the Department of Planning has trained hundreds of urban, regional and economic planners across the West African sub-region, and is counted among the best planning schools on the continent. It is a founding member of the Association of African Planning Schools (AAPS) and has produced the Chair of its Steering Committee for two consecutive terms.

Currently, the Department offers two undergraduate and eight postgraduate programmes as follows:

Undergraduate Programmes:

  • BSc. Human Settlement Planning
  • BSc. Development Planning

Postgraduate Programmes:

  • MSc/MPhil Development Policy and Planning
  • MSc/MPhil Development Planning and Management
  • MSc/MPhil Development Studies
  • MSc/MPhil Planning

The department collaborates with the Centre for Settlements Studies at the College of Art and Built Environment, KNUST, to run the MPhil Urban Management Studies programme.

Aside our academic programmes, we are involved in many cutting-edge research activities spanning planning related fields such as urban sustainable development and city management; regional planning and sustainable community development; climate change and natural resources management; transportation and infrastructure planning among others. Outcomes of many of these research works have serve as the bases for effective and efficient spatial and socio-economic planning practice in Ghana and across Africa. The Department is also involved in many community services, aimed at bringing participatory and sustained development to all communities and institutions we are engaged with.

Please, feel free to contact us on our various platforms for any further information you may need. We are ready and excited to engage you on all planning issues in Ghana in particular, and Africa as a whole.

Once again, Welcome!

AKWAABA!!!
